Market Rate for Private Tutors in Singapore

This is an evergreen eternal frequently asked question by Singaporean parents, more particularly parents of 11-12 year old taking their Primary School Leaving Examination (PSLE) exams for the year.

Okay here we go –

 

The market rate is $50 an hour for a NIE-trained teacher/ former teacher with at least 5 years of experience teaching in a mainstream school.

 

Undergraduate university students rate vary from $25-$33 an hour.

 

Present Award Winning Tutors charge $50-$100 an hour. These are the ones winning mainstream teaching awards from mainstream organisations like MOE, Sinda, Mendaki, CDAC etc where competition is amongst thousands.

Choose and invest in tutors for your children wisely. Dont waste money on the Babysitter Tutor or the Online Tutor who spams his services in forums and fb pages.

 

Check their credentials and look out for awards like OCA award and teaching awards from mainstream organisation.

An inquiry from a concerned parent –

my daughter is academically weak and has a poor memory. I would need an English tutor who has experience with such children and patient.
any advice if I should get a school teacher or private tutor for 1-1?
for secondary 1.

I would suggest a freelance tutor who is a current English teacher in a MOE mainstream school. Might be hard to source for but i know of some. Why? In touch with current syllabus and also a setter for current EL syllabus exam papers hence someone who knows the ins and outs & loopholes of the exam paper.

 

Ask if the tutor has a Certificate in Educational Support. It is a certificate for selected teachers in schools to coach students with poor memory and learning difficulties. They know the ways to enhance childrens’ cognitive abilites via self efficacy. Else, ask if the tutor has a Diploma in Special Education (DISE). These are indications of the tutor’s passion and interest. The default qualification is the basic NIE teaching certificate (DipEd or PGDE).

 

Otherwise, any joe can handle and babysit a tutee.

 

Remember, all tutors can teach but not all have the ability to outreach and educate our children in a manner he or she can understand or relate in his / her learning style (kinaestatic, visual etc). You can practise some brain warm-ups to enhance neurological connections as instructed here in this link. It helped a lot of my teachers i’m training currently.

Okay guys… Pay attention.

 

Let’s time travel back to our classrooms back when all of us needed to brush our teeth after recess time along the long canteen corridors. The place where we pride ourselves with long knee length socks and parade around with the coolest cartoon themed bags around school.

 

Back in the classroom, the musty sort of nostalgic smell of that typical classroom smell permeates the room while our old haggard unmotivated teacher yells “Pay Attention!” at every 5 to 8 minute interval. At one era, white chalk sticks would fly to distracted students’ foreheads. Headshot. Another era, we may need to stand for the entire lesson just because we didn’t pay attention.

 

Pay attention. Pay what?

 

A phrase that has been conditioned and drilled into the minds of youth. Perhaps an unintentional prayer and subconscious mental attraction to pay and pay in the future?

 

Student attention is perhaps the main and primary tick box a teacher in a classroom face on a daily basis. If our students do not focus their attention to whatever that is coming outta our mouths in forms of instructions or demonstrations, quite frankly, it doesn’t matter how effective our lessons are. All that sweat, blood and tears working and plowing through the evenings preparing our lessons will just be… well, sweat, blood and tears. Wasted.

 

“There is no such thing as not paying attention, the brain is always paying attention to something.” – Patricia Wolfe (2001, pg. 80)

 

That student in your class who glanced out to the students playing soccer at the basketball court from a distance while you’re going through pythagoras theorem, is he not paying attention? He is. Paying attention but only to the soccer game outside classroom.

 

Attention is selective.

This happens in my classroom as well. All the time. And like you, we understand our students. We are not going to yell “Pay Attention” to our students like how our former unmotivated teachers did back in the past.

 

Let’s be honest, did we really pay attention to our lecturers 100% while we were checking out our handphones or laptops in the lecture hall? Not all the time. But there is always that special unique teacher or lecturer that starts off with funny or interesting attention grabbers or with personal stories.

 

I vividly remember one of my favorite teachers back as a student, coming into class and started off with sort of an accolade session. I have adopted her technique and style in my teachings ever since. Her name is Miss Wong and I hated Geography lessons until she came, she saw and she conquered. She would always be seen smiling. There is not one trace of hatred in her heart. Here is what she did –

Miss Wong would start the class with a magic spell. She would cast Shower of Praises Level 1 magic spell in the class. Miss Wong would request individual students one at a time to stand up, and she would describe and express the awesome things and attributes she love about us. Maybe 1-2 students a day.

 

“Abdullah(not his real name), you are a natural born leader. You always amaze me with your quality writings and work in class. Although at times you tend to start fighting and slamming your friends on tables in a, what do you call it? A Tables Match? I really like how much you have tremendously improved and I really think you would be a successful man when you grow up. Stay that way Abdullah and never stop learning,” pointed Miss Wong in an enthusiastic tone.

 

I tell you, at that juncture.. From another corner in the classroom, I saw a ferocious jungle muddy fat and ugly hippo morph into a smiling and tearing puppy in a very green garden with butterflies and rainbow and all that stuff.

 

I can also honestly share that as an educator today, showering praises to our students the way my teacher did is an emotional task for me as well. But it is a good feeling.

What’s up guysss?

One of the more productive ways I have always love to start classes is with – Brain Warm-ups.

I’m sure most of us would have went for a couple of workshops or courses previously where the instructor would flash Brain Teasers once in a while (and of course, those free candies on every group tables!) to sustain engagement and active participation.

 




I’d like to share an experience I had at an enrichment education centre of which I was previously invited to observe sometime last year.

The lower primary school students were solving complex arithmetic questions mentally, Professor X style effortlessly. The trainer kept shooting random mathematical questions and interesting ‘sorting’ questions to his students and he went on and on and on before delivering the actual lesson programme. And the students’ responses were quick too!

 

They were certainly conditioned. How?

 

Brain Warm Up - Activating Neurological Connections For Classroom Starter2

 

I prefer to call it – Brain Warm-ups. I am not sure what its real terminology is and yes, I believe they have a scientific boring name for it but let’s just stick to Brain Warm-ups and keep it simple.

I could recall vividly from prior knowledge that these Brain Warm-ups are effective at improving our working memory and more importantly, staying cognitively healthy and sharp as we age.

 

Here’s a little preview of what I do –

  • Count backwards from 50. (Or any random 2-digit number)

I personally go for ‘duels’ of 2 students going at it turn by turn one at a time. I’d record their timings and take note of which number they would stop either by uttering a wrong number or a long 3 to 5 second pause.

 

  • Match Noun to Alphabet.

Our students LOVE this! I would list down all the alphabets on the whiteboard in alphabetical order and choose a ‘theme’. For example – Food.

A – Apple

B – Banana

C – Char Kuey Teow

And so forth..

 

Then it’s going to be a ‘duel’ again, 2 students challenging each other and their turn ends until they get speechless with a 3 second pause.

I’ve tried schoolmates’ names, teachers’ names, countries (fairly easy and should be a starter theme), Mathematical terms, Movie titles, anything… you name it!

A – Andrei

B – Bernice

C – Coco

And so forth..

 

What a beautiful 10 minute lesson starter. I love to demonstrate one round to the class myself, I mean we all want the benefits as well.

 

So, what benefits?

The beautiful thing about Brain Warm-ups is that it creates those ‘spider-web’ kind of neurological connection in our brains by activating all hemispheres in our brains to communicate with each other.

It improves our working memory because we have to consciously keep track and retrieve information simultaneously during a Brain Warm-up round. The moment we say Apple, we already need to think of a noun that fits the theme for the letter B.

It teaches how to think fast and to access our brains much more efficiently.

 




More importantly, it teaches us and our students how to focus and concentrate. You can’t scroll through Facebook and simultaneously say names of your students in alphabetical order without pausing right?

The Cockroach Theory

In a restaurant, 4 ladies decided to dine in for a lavish meal. A well-dressed waiter comes along and passed the ladies each a menu so they could choose which set meal they’d like to have.

Outta nowhere, a fat flying cockroach landed on the edge of the dining table and the ladies started to freak out. All 4 of the ladies were on their feet, jumping around and screaming hysterically. The screaming and frantic reactions caused the cockroach to fly and land on another group of table of ladies. The same thing happened to the other table and more ladies started jumping on their seats, complaining and screaming away.

The waiter, in a non-chalant and calm manner, approached the cockroach, stomped on it in a split-second, picked it up and threw it away in a nearby rubbish bin. Problem solved.

 

Question – What is the main difference between the group of ladies and the waiter?

The ladies were being Reactive whilst the waiter was being Responsive.

The waiter chose to be Proactive and had the ability to respond and handle the current situation. He did not waste any time waiting for solutions to come but chose to respond with a practical situation. Life goes on and problem is solved.

Life did not go on for the ladies in the restaurant. They were stuck in a timeline where the cockroach ‘appeared in their minds’ for the next couple of hours. Sometimes days.

For the waiter, life goes on and he moved on. He had a sumptuous meal with burgers and pizzas, talked about the little happy things in life and cycled back home happily listening to his favorite songs in his MP3 player after work.

 

If everyone around us is Reactive, then nothing much will be done. The timeframe will still move on and yet, nothing will change if we choose to be reactive, reacting by whining or complaining or crying. The situation would still stay the same UNTIL we approach it the Responsive way – Do something about it. Take a step back, plan and reflect on your next course of actions and take action. (Or you can wait until someone else does something and wait.. and wait.)

 

Take for example – one fine day, you are making your way to school on foot. While walking towards school, you decided that it’ll be good to take a shortcut and take the dirt track and through some unforeseen event, you step on a pile of dog crap.

How would you react? By blaming the dogs who crap on random areas? By taking a screenshot of your shoe (with crap) and complain over social media FB and such? Then whine over the issue in school and wait for solutions to come?

Or would you respond to the situation, move on and find a solution like finding a used cloth or wooden plank and slowly remove the crap off your shoe. A running tap of clean water is readily available nearby in many places, in school, multi storey carparks etc.

 

Respond, Settle the Issue and Move On.

Wow. The feeling of having full control of your life is wonderful.

Respond to the situation with a practical action instead of complaining and whining about it.

Don’t be a negative force. It’ll only bring the team down and only attract more negative losers. Guess what? The positive forces will naturally move on and steer away from negative people. Positive people would only attract positive outcomes and positive happenings. That is why positive people are always happy and successful in their lives no matter what rank or status they have.

Respond and don’t React to the situation.

 

Reactive people –> Loser Mentality.

Responsive people –> Winner Mentality.

 

Students, you will have satisfaction and when you take charge and control of your lives. Create your own luck and lay the path to your own future.

 

The best teacher in this world is yourself and only you and we, tutor-educators will always be there, clapping and cheering you on through times of ease and hardship.

Thanks for the note.  Nowadays I go back to school on Tuesdays in the morning and it really makes my day to see the kids, especially the ones from class 2G.  That class is super lovely and I miss them.

 

I look back and think about the work I used to do, compared to what I’m trying to do now.  In school we run around so much and can sometimes lose focus.

 

But since I started with *a-tough-school*, I have learnt to keep my focus on the kids.  It was very easy at *tough-school* because right from the school leaders to the school security staff, everything is about  – the kids’ wellbeing.

I’m appreciative of that experience and it has reshaped my education “philosophy”. 

 

In my earlier years of teaching, I wanted to make sure my class scores the highest, in terms of passing, in terms of distinction – now I realized that’s what I wanted, and may not be what the children needed. 

 

I have also come to realize that not all kids are going to do well in class and not all kids need to be leaders and want to be leaders (I, for one, have never wanted to lead, I always preferred to take the back seat, and still do.)

 

But we must acknowledge that all kids have to learn about decency, basic courtesy, working with others, being responsible, taking calculated risks and making decisions, and taking responsibility for those decisions, etc.

 

Education is a big business and we all know it is not easy.  And I believe, in my small ways, I can make a difference, even if it is just a tiny bit of difference 🙂

Is it beneficial for our learners or can it be a detrimental cause for learning in the classroom?

 

A mix of both would be ideal. While we want to have order and routines in our classrooms, it is especially good to have a conducive environment where everyone is free to voice out their opinions and perspectives in a safe and inviting manner.

 

I personally like to share this old but gold video by Key and Peele. It’s one of their first few biggest hits – the Substitute Teacher. We call them Relief Teacher in Singapore.
A Relief Teacher is basically and more commonly a temporary staff who is assigned relief classes to cover absent permanent teachers on leave. They are paid by the day, about $65-$90 a day depending on their highest level of academic qualifications.

 

Students love relief teachers. This means free time and opportunity to break away from typical mundane routines from their boring teachers. On another side of the story, students can also hate relief teachers. This means unproductive time and unfacilitated learning from their permanent teacher.

Points of Discussion (with students)

 

  1. What is it about the teacher in the video do you like about?
  2. What is it about the teacher in the video do you dislike about?
  3. Do you understand what he’s talking about most of the time?
  4. Do you think he is fair in punishing his students?
  5. How would you react and respond in a better way if your teacher mispronounced your name wrongly?
  6. Are all teachers perfect?

 

While we want a full duplex state of mutual understanding with our students, we should always remind ourselves that addressing our students by their names is of utmost importance. Can’t go wrong with this!

 

Calling a student boy or girl doesn’t cut it anymore. In fact, it is a big sign of disrespect. I remember a teacher calling me boy the entire year and not putting in enough effort in small things like remembering my name as a student back then. It was disgusting. It was de-motivating and worse than words of doom and gloom from any teacher. It was that sense of unacknowledgement.

 

So don’t start teaching your subjects before you even know your students’ names..!

 

Dear Class,
We tutor educators want to treat you with respect and want you to know that when we pronounce your name incorrectly, we do not mean it. Sometimes, you need to tell and be transparent with us if we have mispronounced your name wrongly.

Commentary on Map & Scales for 3N Math (Singapore)

Here’s some commentary on what we have covered during our Learning Session this morning. A common mistake we make in class is – giving the wrong answers when we have the solution right before our eyes.    (-_-)

 


 

First off, we always want to READ the question carefully to understand and comprehend what is it that the question asks for?

Does the question ask for the REAL distance aka the actual distance? Or is it asking for the map distance?

“Find the distance between the two bus stops on the map.”

On the Map. Referencing on the Scale Rule where [1:n] –> map : actual, the question is asking for the map distance, not the real actual distance. In this case, the map distance is in most cases always in cm.

 


 

Next, always take note of unit conversions. Do make things easier for yourself – make sure that both units on the LHS and RHS are in the same unit of measurement when we simplify. It makes calculation easier, especially when we need to express the answer in a specific unit of measurement.

 

  • 1 m –> 100 cm. (A sample reach of an MMA fighter is about 200cm aka 2m)
  • 1km –> 1000 m. (So when we run 2.4 km during PE, how much distance are we actually running in metres?)
  • This makes 1 km –> 100 000 cm. (The decimal point jumps 5 times in total)

Because Play is Work and Work is Play

You’re so busy. Don’t you feel tired? A common question asked by my colleagues and tutor-educator friends.

 

Honestly, yes I do. I do feel tired.

 

I feel drained at the end of the day and I can just KO and zzz on the bed instantaneously. Well, sort of. After the post-work shower, eating dinner, typing out this post, reading a book, short cardio intervals. Then and only until then, I will truly KO on the bed instantaneously. KO – Knock Out.

 

I would go on to do teaching in a private education centre on weekdays all the way till 6pm. Spearhead a couple of other education centres and observe-mentor tutor-educators on weekday evenings. Conduct sharing sessions with aspiring educators. Lead and facilitate math heuristics workshops on Saturday mornings. Teach PSLE Math on Saturday afternoons. Occasionally, run Math seminars on Sundays at various community centres as Lead Trainer.

 

Once in a while, I would just be happy to conduct free mathematics clinic and refresher topical workshops for financially assisted students who truly deserve the help.

 

It is no wonder colleagues ask if I am ever tired. I honestly do. I do feel tired. But the fatigue only sets in only when I decide and choose to lay down on the bed after a long day.

 

Because I love doing what I do. The thought of going into the classroom, seeing students’ expressions of learning something new and knowing that you are part of contributing factors in making a child’s future brighter is what pumps me.

 

This is it. I know what I want and I would strive towards it. I know how tired I am, I would always end the day with satisfaction.

The professional football player trains day in and out and scores goals in leagues most definitely because he loves it. He is paid to do what he loves most. Everyone wants to get paid to do something they love!

 

I know of a producer who loves writing so much that he decided to leave school of medicine in his final year to pursue his love in writing plays. He followed his heart and never looked back since. Would he be better off spending his life as a doctor? No one knows. But one thing is for sure – he is happy and has a much better sense of fulfillment rather than slaving away and working feverishly as a doctor.

 

I know students who love to play Dota so much that they can accurately describe every single game characters’ details and features effortlessly. The lich king can recover 15% health with a sacrifice of a creeper and the probability of unleashing the double headed mage’s Triple spell is 30% and etc. (Or something like that, I can’t remember).

 

Amazing how any individual can excel in a field he loves so much. These guys should become video game analysts! I always tell them. I would always relate and share with them how one of my school friends is now a Video Game Analyst in the US mashing buttons and testing video games daily. Paid to do what he loves most. Our students should know and should be encouraged to pursue a job they love.

 

Another wonderful student I know loves photography so much. The problem is, he is one of the top achievers in his batch for academics. Everything he shares with his teachers of his dream to be a photographer, he gets slammed with alternating suggestions like the typical doctor and lawyer dream. Since he is academically inclined, teachers would find it a waste.

 

What waste? What an opportunity. I’m pretty sure he’s still snapping away high quality photographs in his junior college years and at the same time, still scoring em A grades.

I am truly always astonished especially by my N(T) students’ potential capabilities. We must be there to always believe in their dreams and passion and not cast a shadow of a doubt in their blueprints of life. We tutor educators must relentlessly encourage our students to believe in their dreams and remind them time and time again that the route to their dreams is a single step at a time and to never give up.

 

So if you’re a student,

 

The question is – what is the one thing that you love to do during your free time? Your body moves automatically and starts doing the one thing that gives you a great sense of achievement and fulfillment.

 

What is the one thing that you would love to do it for free that makes you very very happy?

 

The answer to that is the answer to your passion. Now that we know what our passion in life is, we are no longer seekers. We are strivers, striving towards our love. And when we do what we love, we don’t feel tired. Almost never.

Importance of Bringing a Calculator daily for Maths

When i was a student in secondary school, i had my very first scientific calculator. I could vividly remember how ‘new’ it smelt and how delicate its features were. The greyish-black exterior were the exact ones i saw the upper secondary students use and skilfully mug away for their examinations. It was a cool sight nevertheless looking at how the seniors tap away digits and evaluating answers from a handheld gadget. We didn’t have mobile phones at that time.

 

The scientific calculator at that time in 1997 were only introduced in secondary one in Singapore. It was actually fun playing with it the very same day i got it. The buttons ‘sin’, ‘cos’, ‘log’ were the interesting buttons to mash and it kept me wondering whether some mathematical equations were sinful or had a logical reasoning behind every statement. We have to use the ‘cos’ button to justify our problem sum workings perhaps.

 

The first week of school was the usual Sec 1 orientation with the introductory games and ice-breaking sessions. Students participated in booths and games ranging from mini-football penalty shootouts, hoola hoops and what-nots.

 

Students were asked to safekeep their school bags on one corner of the premise, somewhere near the canteen where the crowds were (cool idea by the school level head by the way! Personal belongings near large crowds the way to go! Brilliant.) and had a schedule to rove around different booths and game areas.

 

When the dust has settled and the smoke is clear, it was time to go back home. I had made a lot of friends who eventually became the best of friends in my life and we chatted about everything under the sun as we strutted and monkeyed around to get our bags back.

 

I was as excited as a nerd to immediately take out my brand new calculator and since it was a 10 minutes walk back home from school, I have plans to just play around with simple mathematical sums on my calculator while walking back home.

 

My heart. It was my heart. My heart was on the verge of breaking down discovering that there were black stained ‘spider-web’ CRACKS on the lcd display of my little sweet baby CALCULATOR! Some lagoon had stepped on my bag. Dude, i saved so much money from my Hari Raya savings to buy school books and the calculator costed roughly about $27-$29. It was exorbitantly expensive at that time. To save the same amount to replace my one and only toolkit in Math class would take me more than a month with a daily allowance of $2.

I needed to have a plan.

 

I’ve always believed in keeping things simple so i decided that i would –

 

  1. Firstly save $1.10 and seal it in an envelope daily
  2. Next, spend 70 cents on a plate of Nasi Lemak (yes, it’s that cheap back in the day) and 20 cents on Soya Bean drink for recess breaks daily.
  3. I had a backup plan – I had a target to approach 3-5 senior students to ask if i can purchase a second-hand calculator. (This is a dumb move. Being young and inexperience, nobody is going to sell their calculator not until graduation.) After a month of futile and embarrassing attempts, I realised that it was truly a bad plan. However, I learnt something else from that experience. 🙂 Will share in details soon.

 

I would have a replacement calculator by the end of the month. I felt assured and i was looking forward to the challenge.

 

The second week of school came. I struggled in class and was lagging everyone behind. While everyone finished a page of Math workbook, I was still at a third of the page. It was then that i realised the importance of a calculator. It was the ultimate tool any student could have to excel and to make everything SO MUCH EASIER in the classroom especially in Math! It felt like Batman without the Batarang.

 

I was struggling to cope and i was gaining the least experience points in the class while others were leveling up rapidly and seeing substantial upgrades in their intelligence and agility ratings. RPG talk, bro.

 

There was another bugger in the class who also did not have a calculator but he was different. He was plain lazy and chose not to do something about it. Even after a couple of months, he did not realise the advantages of investing in a calculator. $27-29 for 4 years was a good investment.

 

Before i knew it, I got my new, clean, epic, fresh, ‘UP-THERE’ calculator. I was ecstatic. I wanted to sleep like a baby that night when i finally GOT BACK MY CALCULATOR WOOHOO..! Video games? What video games? Calculator time!

 

I remembered happily scribbling answers and workings on my workbook at home with my new gadget fresh out of the oven. Oh yeah and street fighter games at night with ma brothers.

 

Today, (everyday actually) I would emphasize the importance of a calculator in my N(T) class. How much of a good investment it was and how significant it was.

 

A little something i did not know as a student was – I did not know that we could actually ASK our teachers for help in acquiring a calculator. I was not informed that such things were feasible. I have always viewed teachers as angry busy barking creatures back then but at the same time, teachers have another side of them that are clean.

 

Ask. Ask. Ask.

 

Some teachers would go all the way to help their students and provide financial support. They do not entirely cover the full cost but they help to cushion the cost because they want to teach their students to be independent and self-directed.
